Quick NOT EQUAL TO Question

Hey folks...

using 5.5.2 Teamsite - messing around with Templating on our site - in the .tpl file I have an expression that starts with:

<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_Services;">
<iw_then>
...

what i need it to be is:
<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_Services; and not &NEWENT_AnotherItem; ">
<iw_then>
...

what's the expression for the "and not" - or and not equal to?

First - am I correct in assuming that NEWENT_Services and NEWENT_AnotherItem are subroutines?

I believe what you want is (untested - I tend to use pure Perl PTs):<iw_if expn='(NEWNET_Services() && !NEWENT_AnotherItem());'>
...

thanks for the reply - that throw an error - those items (&NEWENT_AnotherItem) are just selections in the datacapture screens.

i've got the ORs down... ie:
<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_CareersLeadershipPrograms; || &NEWENT_CareersHRL; || &NEWENT_CareersEEDP; || &NEWENT_CareersOMLP;">

but what's the 'but not equal to'? "&&" didn't work, neither did 'ne'

hmmm... i may have to consider coding the navigation items differently to avoid having to use this.

I guess I should have looked at the docs first anyway (like I said, I don't use XML-style PTs very often).

First off - it looks like it's expr not expn (a close look at the actual code shows that they are synonymous - the docs use the former, the tutorial code uses the latter, sigh) and secondly you need to encode the & as & or use the literal 'and' (as you were proposing originally).

The third part I'm still not sure of - which is what you mean by &NEWENT_AnotherItem being a "selection in the datacapture screen" - generally one would use the <iw_value .../> or {iw_value .../} syntax to reference a value from the DCR being processed.

Can you provide a bit of context for the example - as it what does NEWENT_AnotherItem refer to? is it a specific item within the DCR? or something else? Are you sure it's not a [missing?] function call - perhaps you could post the entire PT?

i coded those as entities (&amp Smiley Wink

- still didn't work correctly.

the AnotherItem refers to a pulldown selection the user makes in the DCR.

i'm 'printing' the navigation through a series of if/then, if/else statements.

for instance, if the user selected Ice Cream AND Chocolate in the DCR, the nav code in the tpl is:
<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_IceCream; and &NEWENT_Chocolate;"><iw_then><![CDATA[ display the nav here ]]>

the deal is - i had a new item to add... for example Ice Cream No Cone.

so i was going to do: <iw_if expn="&NEWENT_IceCream; and &NEWENT_NoCone"><iw_then><![CDATA[ display the nav here ]]>

problem is, if my regular nav remains the way it is, i'll get double navigation if NoCone is selected... here is an example of both together.

<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_IceCream; and &NEWENT_NoCone"><iw_then><![CDATA[ display the nav here ]]></iw_then></iw_if>
<iw_if expn="&NEWENT_IceCream;"><iw_then><![CDATA[ display the nav here ]]></iw_then></iw_if>

that's why in the 2nd line i wanted to add BUT NOT EQUAL TO NoCone to prevent that line from triggering if someone selected NoCone.

confused yet? i almost am. ;-)

btw - i figured out a way to do it using <else> and nesting it in the original line - but i just want to know why this wouldn't work in the first place.
