teamsite 5.5.2 branch incremental versioning

hi ,
I am new to Interwoven teamsite, we are using teamsite 5.5.2. Can anyone please explain to me what do you mean by branch incremental versioning ?? how do we check the same? In which config file would this parameter be set????
