javascript in XHTML

hi,
I have a javascript function written with the HTML document. When I run the validator on w3.org it complains about the < and & symbols. Any idea how I can avoid these error while keeping the javascript with the HTML file itself. The architect over here doesn't want the javascript functions to be in an external file.

We are using the following in the header
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

Any help is appreciated

Have you tried escaping the problem characters? Depending on the number of parsers acting upon your code, you may need to escape them multiple times.

Thanks for the response. I am sure that by putting & and < instead of & and < all those errors will go away. I was wondering if theres an option like CDATA that I can use and put all the java script in it to avoid getting through the validator's parser.

I'm not sure that doing that will cause it to go away. I'd be interested to know if that's the case, but I think the more likely fix may be to escape (perhaps multi-escape) those characters.
