Dreamweaver slow when editing directly on Y: drive

When we edit in the Design view in Dreamweaver MX 2004, we get the hourglass and a white square icon when doing operations as simple as bolding text. even typing in the design view lags behind the keystrokes.
we've run the following tests:
we connected to a file on the server, but not on Y:, and edited in DW and had no performance issues.
we edited a file on the Y: drive in Dreamweaver Code view and had no performance issues.

Can you help us by trying to edit in Dreamweaver Design view on your system and tell us if you experience the same problems?

we mapped a drive to the workarea, then created a site in Dreamweaver, but this is not necessary. you can browse in Windows Explorer to a file and edit. It should give you the same effect.

only an idea: Do you know of Dreamweaver works with a lot of temporary working files if you are in design view?
Perhaps the tmp files are written on Y: ...
