ImageInfo-BigPreview.asp
ScrodMan
Hello.
When viewing a big preview of an image on a mac computer, when I try to save the image by clicking and choosing to save image to the desktop the save-as dialog box is giving the default name as something like "bigpreview" and I want the default name to be the actual file name.
I think I need to work with the file "ImageInfo-BigPreview.asp" or maybe "PreviewImage.asp"
Can anyone help with this please?
Thanks.

Unfortunately, there's probably not much you can do about that. We stream the large thumbnail you're viewing from an ASP page. The ASP page requests the content from the server (it could be resolved from a lower level memory based cache maintained by the client-side dls). If you use an HTTP packet sniffer you'll notice we're passing the correct mime type (jpeg for thumbnails) and the base file name in the Content Disposition header. Safari chooses to ignore the Content Disposition header and uses the name of the ASP page requested as the file name. If you run the same test using IE on Windows, you'll notice the suggested file name is used in the "save as..." dialog. I also don't see a way to configure Safari so it would prompt you for a location to download to, rather than downloading everything to a predefined location (which isn't very convenient).
(You can also run the same test on a mac using Camino, FireFox, and Netscape and notice the "save as..." dialog uses the file name passed in the Content Disposition header. Note these browsers aren't officially supported by MediaBin.).

Thanks for your reply.
Is it possible to create a href link that performs the same actions as whatever code is already in the asp page that loads in the preview? So when rigth clicking the link and choosing save target as, it would download the picture? Just a thought.

The answer to your question depends on how much customization of the existing MediaBin web client you're willing to undertake. We don't maintain a file based cache for thumbnails. Our cache is memory based and is hidden from the ASP code. It's written in C++. In fact the thumbnail content is actually streamed to the ASP response buffer by C++ code. We optimize performance by using the browser's cache and keeping track of whether image content has been updated that might affect the appearance of the thumbnail.
You would need to create a file on the local web server for each thumbnail. Your link would point back to that file. This is possible. Using our API, you can get the thumbnail content by an ASP page using the Asset:
review function. (Asset:
howPreview is the function that streams from C++). Before you jump into this, you may want to consider performance implications and how you would manage the thumbnail files, especially if your system permits updates to existing images that may change their appearance.
Perhaps Apple will update Safari in the future to use the Content Disposition header. One catch here is that some firewalls may strip this header to prevent hackers from possibly dropping executable files on the local PC. Rather than inspect the header "dangerous" filename extensions, it seems they've taken the "hammer" approach and just remove the entire header!

Thank you for your detailed assistance. It has clarified this issue for me significantly. I will let you know what solution I end up using.
