how to access teamsite file from external interface
sandy_893
Hi
i need to create a tool that will test some files present in the Teamsite. So is it possible to access the Teamsite files through an external interface. If so then which utilities need to be called.

I think you need to provide more details if you want reasonable responses.
For instance:
What do you mean by "test some files present in Team
ite" ?Test to see if they exist?
Test to see if they are readable? writable?, executable?
Run some [formal] test suite over the files to verify that they conform to some standard?
etc.
What do you mean by "external interface" ?
The tool will be run from a machine other than the TS server?
The tool will be run on the TS Server but will not be using the TS GUIs?
Other?
Basics:
What version of TeamSite?
What platform(s)?
What programming language(s)?
There may be other questions - but the above should give you an idea of how vague your initial posting was. The likely answer has something to do with CSSDK - but that could be completely off-base depending on the details you provide.

i am sorry for being vague. Following is the detailed information
Basic Info :
TeamSite Version : 5.5
OS Platform : Unix
Language : Java
What do you mean by "test some files present in TeamSite" ?
i need to build a tool that will check some links and content of the files being generated in TeamSite.
What do you mean by "external interface" ?
The tool will be executed from the user machines. This will provide the list of folders containing files on which the users will perform the tests. The folders need to be read from the TS server.
One more thing, i was trying to access the files from the TS server using java.net api's, but its giving me IOExceptions. Is this due to the fact that since i am not logged on to the server i can't access the file or due to some other reason.

If you're using 5.5 (5.5.0? 5.5.1? 5.5.2? what SP level?) - I believe you may need to use OpenAPI or CSSDK in order to develop an interface to the TS server for your application - and you'll have to do something about authenticating too. I haven't done any such development so there isn't too much more I can tell you (other than 6.5's CSSDK is probably significantly better than the options available in 5.5.x (which is soon to be unsupported!).
There are a number of applications available for checking links - many of which have been the subject of forum posts in the past (mostly in one of the other forums: TeamSite, Templating, and/or Workflow).
It might be easier (not that "easier" is part of your requirements) to implement such a tool as a custom menu item within the TeamSite UI - in which case authentication will have already been taken care of and access to the files and directories is obviously taken care of too.
Failing that - you might need to consider writing your own client/server application with a "thin client" on the various "user machines" that can then communicate with a server process of some sort that is running on the TeamSite server. You'll still have to handle authentication and you'll still probably need to look at both OpenAPI and CSSDK to determine which of the two (if either) provide the functionality you need for interacting with the files.
Hopefully one of the various folks out here who have done development with either OpenAPI or CSSDK will be able to chime in with some more useful information for you - but in the meantime I suggest you find/download documentation on both OpenAPI and CSSDK (for 5.5.x) and do a bit more digging on your own. You may be able to resolve the issue completely yourself; and if you can't, you'll be in a better position to post more detailed questions regarding explicit implementation issues.

The CSSDK was available in 5.5, and I recommend you look at that not OpenAPI, which is really a deprecated API now.
That said, the CSSDK 1.0 version is what shipped with 5.5.x, and there were significant changes in 6.x.
You should give serious consideration to upgrading to TS6 if at all possible. There are many more options for you to build a UI that would integrate with other applications.
You might want to look at Dan Bowker's GearUp presentation here, which discusses precisely that.
