Document transfer services

Hi all !!

we need to implement a Web Service for external applications to:

1) Download documents from the repository

2) Upload documents to the repository

Anyone has experience in this? We are thinking about different options:

1) Implement a Web Service which uses DFC and ucf transfer mode

2) Implement a Web Service which uses DFC and http transfer mode

3) Implement a Web Service which uses DFS to consume content transfer services

Any more possibilities? Any help will be appreciated.

Recommend to use DFS with UCF to build your web services.

The reason is that DFS encapsulates many low level DFC APIs and therefore well-tested DFS API is much easier to use and could reduce possible mistakes for you. And also provides enough flexibility like customized service for you to extend its functionality.

For content transfer, DFS integrates the following standard and proprietary content transfer technologies:
• base64
• MTOM
• UCF

The reason why we recommend UCF is because:
• UCF optimized end-to-end transfer along a service chain
• UCF support for distributed content through integration with ACS and BOCS
• UCF support for post-transfer actions (which generally means opening the content in a viewer or editor)

First of all thank you for your response,

but we have another doubt. Is it a good option to publish a web service just to call another DFS service?

The applications which will access to our web service do not know Documentum DFS API... but 2 hops is not efficient...

Is it simple for example to generate a Web Service client with DFS API and give it to the applications to access directly?

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am very new to documentum , By using Object Service i am able to upload a document to the documentum.

But I am not able to download a document from the documentum , I am not able to proceed further. Could any one post some sample code to download document from documentum .

If DFS services and your web services are in different host, you need to do remote web service call in-between them.

But if they're deployed in the same box, you can utilize getLocalService() of ServiceFactory to get DFS service to be called and executed in local JVM.

The second option will be more efficient and additional call will not be performance bottleneck when it's applicable.

Another option for you can be write your own customized DFS services and deployed them as new DFS services.They will use invocation chain to invoke your logic and DFS services step by step.

Of course, if your client is just web service client, you can use either way to access DFS service:

WSDL-based consumer development
DFS Java client library, which is included in the SDK.

You can use get operation of ObjectService to download documents from repository.The sample code can be found in DFS sdk or dev guide.

Hello,

I don't know if you want to edit the document by doing a checkout operation, but you just want to open it a simple way is to invoke the getcontent component:

http://localhost:8080/name_of_your_application/component/getcontent?objectId=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

when you say in the same box are you meaning that the WS and DFS services are in the same host or in the same application server?

I think that DFS services are deployed in the JBoss that comes with Documentum isn't it?
