Building a custom Tree structure within a WebApplication

Hi,

My Project requirement is to build a WebTop/WDK like custom tree control in a separate WebApplication (Not related to any DCTM Product like WebTop,damTop etc). It may exactly look like or should be similar in behaviour like WebTop/WDK; It will get the Data feed (cabinet,community,folder, content etc) from a DFS Service (or custom DFS service). What should be our design/implementation strategy? Your quick response would be highly appreciated.

It's likely that people in this community have experience using DFS and web services to connect to Documentum repositories.

So, has anyone built their own controls similar to what Palash is attempting?

If you are consuming DFS, why not build a tree like structure using free available javascript library?

Check google, my first hit was http://www.webxplorer.org/jsTree/ seems quite straight forward.

I won't try migrating any of the WDK components to a custom webapp

There are a wide range of Javascript developer toolkits. You will want AJAX support. I did a little investigation work with a toolkit called dojo last Spring. Seemes good... however we used scriptaculous for a finish as I was making changes to WDK controls

Thanks for the answer. Actually I am talking about an enterprise where we need to consume thousand(s) (> 200000) of objects in Tree view that will include Cabinet,Room,Folder,Sub-Folder. Now each one will have definitely content object. So what would be the good design strategy like :

1) Bring all the object_id,Name etc and maintain the cache. using DFS service And refresh/update the cache periodically. Render the tree whenever

some event happens in Tree Node from cache or

2) Bring the data via DFS service directly per Node click

The same applies for content object view too.I meant each click of folder,sub-folder, do we really need to bring all the object(s) it contains directly via DFS? It might have >200 at each folder/sub-folder

Do you want to mean you have brought and used WDK Tree control (modified with dojo etc) in your custom Web application? Do not you find any challange while using this control in your custom webapplication (independent of webtop,damtop etc) as I suspect that it will have some dependency with other WDK related components? Pl respond.
