DCT containing lot of replicants crashes while opening

Hi all,

TeamSite 6.5 SP1 on Solaris.

My customer has a DCT for Glossary which has about 182 replicants right now. Each replicant has 3 items within it, one with a visual format. The problem is when a user tries to open this DCT, most of the times the browser crashes or freezes before it opens up the DCT. On very few PCs with high memory, it eventually opens after about 5 mins.

I agree its not the best design but before changing the design, I want to see if I could fix this problem in the existing DCT somehow.

This is what I tried:

1. The VF does not make any difference. Even if I removed that item, its still crahes. So I would rule it out.
2. I tried inserting many different things in FormAPI, but nothing works.

- I created a pulldown for A-Z, hide all replicants and make only the ones visible starting with a particular alphabet, so at a time only 10-15 max replicants are open.
- I tried hiding the whole container onLoad.. doesn't help.
- I tried items-per-page in templating.cfg.. doesn't help.

So my conclusion is that it doesn't matter how many fields are visible/invisible, its the number of total replicants that is killing the DCT.

Are there any other thoughts/ideas, before I change the DCT design and start to break it into multiple ones?

It's a bit desperate but you could change the heap setting for the forms client
on the machines which need to open the dcr's.

We came across a similar issue not too long ago but no VF fields. Since we had a support case open for this, we were told it was a bug and there was patch to handle this.

The patch is available with SP2 if you are on TS6.5, which you said you were on but with SP1. You could try that.

Since we were on TS6.1 SP2 and not planning on moving to TS6.5, it did not help us out too much. However, we did make some apache config changes which helped us out tremendously, i.e., browser no longer crashes\freezes\flickers. The dcr takes several minutes to open but that was expected. There are two articles on IW Support site that detail the apache changes. I don't remember the KB ids but one involves mod_expires module and the other with deals with including 'Header unset Vary' line in the apache config file.

What browser are you using?

When your number or replicant instances gets around the 100 mark, IE has real problems handling the quantity of JavaScript. Firefox does a much better job of it.

That said, I'd reccommend just jumping to multiple DCR's as a template that takes 5 minutes to open is hardly an efficient business tool.

If seperate files isn't an option for the data in question, I'd probably go for a bespoke tool running off a custom menu item. All you need is a simple HTML form that writes the data to a database.

I would even recommand using a different external editor than VisualFormat. There are a bunch of external editors available, who are not that memory hungry than visualformatter.
