New Devnet Oddities

I tought I would start a thread of "undocumented features" in the new devnet. Heather and co. can then decide if they are bugs or what.

A couple of different things that I seriously dislike have to do with read/unread messages.

First, if to mark the main page list as read, you read the articles, then refresh the topic, then refresh the main forum page. Boo hiss.

Second, I read devnet this am before work [yes, thank you I have no life] when I got to my office, (behind a corp firewall) messages I read earlier in the day were marked unread. I used the same computer (XP) and browser (Mozilla).

I certainly prefered the old devnet in the fact that by default you go to the 1st unread message, now you hunt for the little icon. More than once, using this stupid touchpad on the laptop, I have gotten the originators profile.

I've done several and/or searches and they work out fine. For example, if I enter:

jeff and bonifacci

I get only one thread back where rob misspelled by last name. But if I enter:

jeff or bonifacci

I get several pages of posts back. I've done several other and/or searches and have not had any problems.

What are you searching for that you think isn't searching correctly?

Found another. There is a limit to 500 private messages (I have 90 in my inbox and 700 in my sent folder. I did not even know there was a sent folder). So I cannot send a new PM out, but there also does not look to be an easy way to bulk delete them. Not gonna happen one at a time.

BTW, who rated my thread terrible ? See if I ever help out you..... :-)

Dug some more, can delete one page (50 at a time) not too bad.

There is a limit to 500 private messages

In the beta it was 10, which I complained about and Heather knocked it up to 100 when the new forum went live. I complained about that too and she bumped it up to 500.

I guess my point is, I like to complain, Smiley Wink

We are trying to find a reasonable number of messages. I know that it is great to have an unlimited amount, because you can keep a copy of everything, but with no limits, everyone's "everything" will cause some drag on the site. There is a feature in the new forums that lets you email other users directly if they have that functionality entitled. This should ease some of the private message traffic.

But let me know if 500 isn't enough. I think it should be for awhile.

Can we set it up to not keep sent PMs by default (it currently saves by default) ? I cannot think too many people have more than 500 in the inbox, but it is easy to have the sent items creep up.

Hi Andy,

I think the functionality of the sent items is the same as it was in the old forums. Both had "save sent messages" by default. We didn't notice it as much because we had an unlimited amount of messages allowed in previous forums. I think after the initial house cleaning of the sent messages, it should be easy to maintain. If people start feeling crunched by the 500 limit, we can make adjustments. I prefer keeping my sent messages when I can. Would you rather have them automatically deleted?

To reply a particular post in a thread, click on "Quote" button in the post.
If you don't want to keep the Quote, you could delete it in the editor that opens next.
