Queue event listener...

Hello everyone...

Here's an interesting one: is it possible to write some "event listener" object so you can monitor the events posted in the event queue (like "dm_startedworkitem") ? I need it for an "audit-like" functionality of my application.

Why dont you just audit that particular workflow event?

There are two reasons I don't use the "traditional" audit:

1. I need to audit some business data also along with the workflow data. The standard audit is not really... business friendly .

2. There's a whole bunch of events being audited on that system already (the audit trail has around 2 million records) so it takes a while to generate a report based on that data. Besides, dm_startedworkitem is not the only event I'm trying to intercept.

Not sure if you are going to avoid the performance issue by creating your custom audit, but for the sake of discussion, if you want to add custom business logic to the audit, here are my two suggestions:

1) If the business logic revolves around adding data from other tables, you can create a database trigger on the dmi_workitem table. The assumption is that the dm_startedworkitem occurs immediately after the creation of the dmi_workitem object.

2) For more complex business logic, you can try to create TBO for dmi_workitem. I havent done this before, so I'm not sure if its possible.

I created a TBO for dmi_workitem, this was my first idea. I only put a log message on dmSave() put I couldn't find it in any of my logs, so my assumption is it doesn't work.

In the mean time I did a little more research on the audit functionality (meaning I read the manual ) and it turns out that the system events do leave behind some additional information like workitem id, performer name etc. in the audit trail. There's also this job, dm_WFReporting, that pull data from the audit tables and stores it in two object types, dmc_completed_workflows and dmc_completed_workitems (this only happens if you audit the dm_workflow_all event). The problem is they hold no reference to the package. The only reference I can get is by querying for dm_addpackage on a certain workflow in the audit entries, but this only gives me the dmi_package object which, if I'm not mistaken, gets deleted once the worfkflow is finished.

Performance will still be an issue though and I don't think there's a way to avoid it.

Is this a typo "dmSave"? It should be "doSave()"

As for the auditrail information, have just tried completing an entire workflow and investing each of the audittrail IDs? Just perform API dump for each ID to get a feel of what exactly is getting logged.

No, that's just a typo right there... it's doSave()
