Creating Types

We have CS 6 SP1

Should we use Composer or DAB to build types? Users should to be able to enter a number for the (dm_folder) Folder they create and all the documents (dm_document) created under that folder should inherit the folder number.

For creating types, can anyone has step by step instructions?

Creating types in Composer is pretty straightforward: right click your project, then New -> Other -> Documentum Artifact -> Type. Double click the resulting artifact and edit the three tabs of info.

To get the inheritance to work the way you described it, your document type will need a TBO that overloads the onSave() method.

Can we configure to inherit the properties or the only option is to create TBO.

The only way to do data (i.e., custom property/attribute) inheritance is via a TBO. (At least that I know of. Maybe someone else out there has better/more clever solution.)

We created a new Type (Folder type) and added some attributes. This new type will show up in Webtop.

Then we created another Type(Document type) and it's super types is the Folder Type we created and it does not show up in Webtop.

Restarted the Repository, Application Server and cleared the cache. Any one why this new type is not showing up in Webtop?

You cant have a "document type" whose parent is "folder type". Your new type will actually be a custom folder type, so if you goto file->new->folder, you will probably see your type there.

So from what I understand is there should be a TBO created inorder for the Inheritance to work . I thought it can also be done thorugh configuration, may be getting confused with other document managment system, correct me if I am wrong experts?

Yes that is correct; you need to build a TBO for your document type to perform the get/set of attribute values. To do this properly, your custom doc type should have the same attributes defined as for your custom folder type. In other words, you will need to define custom attributes twice - one for doc and one for the folder, since you cant inherit them directly.
