Learning PERL suggestions sought

A friend of mine is struggling to learn PERL and it's rather freakish, what resources books, web, vid's, in class suggestions can all of you provide for the newbie?

It depends on how he learns, but any of the o'reailly books would be good:

Programming Perl
Learning Perl
Perl Cookbook
Perl in a Nutshell
Advanced Perl Programming

If he's already a solid programmer, I would just use perl in a nutshell as he really just needs the syntax. If he's also trying to learn to program, I would recommend not beginning with Perl as his first language, it will give him many bad habits that will make it difficult for him to program in other languages in the future. I would first recommend him learning something like C/C++/C# and then learning Perl, but that's probably not a reality if he needs to know Perl now.

If they've had some programming experience before - I'd start with Programming Perl.
If they don't have [much] programming experience - I'd start with Learning Perl.

Personally - I tend to avoid most of the "Nutshell" books - they tend to be very dry and not all that useful IMO - Programming Perl has man pages for all the functions in it and is actually reasonably well written - actually enjoyable to read (which is more than you can say of most technical books).

There are a host of other Perl books out there - both from O'Reilly and others - but I think I'd start with one of the two above first and then spread out after getting some comfort with it.

Heh, well, I guess that's just my preference, those are the only o'reilly books I would actually buy. I just want the syntax for commands and nothing else, all of the narrative text is a waste of time IMO. I don't need them to tell me in what ways to use something, I just need the syntax. But, as I said, just my way of learning and personal preference. If that sounds like you as well, then I would go with the nutshell books, if not, one of the ones fish pointed out is probably a good starting point... [smile]

TeamSite wasn't mentioned in the original post - just someone struggling to learn Perl. From that perspective - if they're looking for a book, Learning Perl is probably one of the best choices.

Taking a training course after reading Learning Perl might be benneficial - but if things "click" sufficiently, reading some of the other Perl books might suffice.

I'd have to agree with ghoti's sentiments. I was already a solid programmer (no comments from jbonifaci) when I had to pick up Perl. I read Programming Perl, and that gave me exactly what I needed.

I also agree that that book is quite enjoyable to read.
