Special Characters: word text into DCR
System
When text from word is copied and placed in the DCR it displays special characters when previewed. The formatting etc in word means we then have to go through replacing all quote marks and carriage returns. Is anyone else experiencing this - what is the cause and can we do anything to avoid it?
Thanks

1. This should be posted to the Templating forum, not TeamSite.
2. Tell what TS version, hardware & client you have.
3. Tell us more about what you are pasting into, is it a VFE ?
4. What customizations have you done to VFE ?
5. May need to see your presentation template.

Hey apologies for posting to the wrong place (new to this) and many thanks for getting back to me so quickly. The answers to your questions are as follows:
1. Interwoven TeamSite 6.5.0 Service Pack 1
The client is IE6
The server is running on Windows 2000 server.
2. Assumming VFE equates to external-editor set to visual formatter - YES
press releases are copied into the detail field
3. See attachment.
4. See attachments. N.B. the "w" tpl is included as sometimes the "special characters" say something which looks like a quote when pasted from word causes the generated rss xml to be unparseable despite the decode/encode process which normally works.
ps. I've attached 3 files - but can't see them in the preview did you get them?
Thanks for your help

Do not see the files you posted.
Did you zip them ?
Also, try to right click in VFE and select clean source from the menu after you paste the text in.

Thanks for that, here are the zipped files - I will try your suggestion of right click - clean source and post if it is successful.

This sounds like a Word issue to me.
At a guess your users are creating the copy in Word with all the Auto junk switched on.
AutoFormat for example will turn the double quote the user types into a 'smart quotes' and hyphens into dash characters. These aren't standard ASCII characters and just cause trouble when pasteing as their character code doesn't map to the same character in UTF8 (assuming you are saving your DCRs in UTF8).
Try the following (for Word 2003).
1) Open Word and select the Tools/AutoCorrect options... menu.
2) Go to the AutoFormat tab and de-select
- "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"
- Fractions (1/2) with fraction character (1/2)
- Hyphens (--) with dash (-)
Now get the editor to re-type a line of text that has been a problem and copy/paste it in to the DCR.
See if you still have the problem.
If this fixes it, either tell your editors to switch off the AutoFormat options, hit the formAPI to write some validation/correction code to check for the problem character codes and replace them with the character the user orrigonally typed.
