vannotate with xml

I'm trying to get vannotate to read in xml dcr's before they are deployed. I can use vannotate for html generated files via the workflow process, but I'm having problems when i'm using xml. Is this something that is possible? has anyone else come across this. We are running Teamsite 6.5 on Solaris and are using ATG for our application server.

I believe Visual Annotate is *only* intended for HTML pages
