Vanishing workarea

This morning we had a little bit of a shock when we logged in and discovered that one of our vital workareas had simply vanished. The branch was still there and the files were still in staging. I was able to restore everything of course by creating a new workarea based on the previous edition. But I wondered if anyone knows what might have caused this. I'm running Teamsite 6.1 SP2.
