Permissions of moved, copied and linked documents.

We implememted 6.5 webtop.  We are using folder security.

In our EMC training class, we were told that a doc that is moved retains its original permission set from its source folder.

Is this accurate?

If so it would keep us from using a technique of working on a doc in an internal-only folder, then when complete, moving it to a customer folder for the customer to view.

Can you verify?

Also, what's the rule for copied and linked docs?  Do they retain the security from the source folder, or inherit the security of the destination folder?

Many thanks,

Bill

    1. When you create/import a document, it gets an ACL assigned unless you assigned it explicitely.

    2. Which ACL gets assigned default depends on how the docbase is setup. By default, it's the ACL associated to the user, not the folder.

    3. Once the object has been created, it keeps its ACL, no matter if you move it or link it to a new location.

    4. If you want the ACL to change when a document gets moved or copied, you will need to do a customisation.

    what about copy?

And you're certain this applies even if we are using folder security?

And that this applies to a linked document, a copied document, and a moved document?

Since a copied doc is an independent object, would that inherit the security of the folder it is copied to?

    Yes I'm certain.

I believe a copy will pick the ACL from the original document.

  • If you want the ACL to change when a document gets moved or copied, you will need to do a customization?

Could you elaborate on what type of customization would be required? Thanks

This post is almost 15 years old… You should probably start a new question instead as the original post was about Webtop. The answer still stands: if you want the ACL to change automatically when you move a document, you need to do a customisation such as writing a TBO. With D2, you could use configuration to perform the same.

Since this popped up this morning due to a new comment. If you were to move from Webtop to Documentum Smart View client (formerly D2), ACL changes are driven by security configurations which can change on link, move, copy, lifecycle state change, etc. No customization is required to do this with Documentum Smart View client only configuration.
