Hi,

I want to understand if Java can be used to customize various functionalities provided by Teamsite 6.5.

Currently all our customization is done in Perl for Teamsite 5.5, we are upgrading to Teamsite 6.5 and along with the upgrade we want to throw away the Perl code and do all the customization in java, Is this feasible?

I believe almost all UI customizations can be done in Java using the CSSDK.
Workflow externaltask and cgitask scripts may be a bit more problematic (I believe some folks have had success with the latter - not sure about the former).
And then there are the PTs for FormsPublisher - which can theoretically be written in any arbitrary language as long as it provides the functionality for accessing the elements of the file (DCR) being processed.

I don't have much in the way of Java experience - so someone else will have to provide details - but if you search the various forums I believe you'll be able to find some relevant threads.

We have done exactly what you are mentioning. We use servlets and jsps instead of perl cgi tasks and standalone java programs for external tasks. Similarly, we use Java servlets and JSPs for any Template form api call server and callout functionality. There is information on how to begin working with this in the TeamSite user interface customization guide.

We haven't done much in the way of converting presentation template code yet, but we will do that as well.

Couple things to keep in mind:
- you must have TeamSite 6.5 SP1 at a minimum to do everything I mention above
- look at the CSSDK javadocs to familiarize yourself with what and how to do things
- there is no direct template functionality exposed via the CS SDK
- use an IDE like Eclipse, it makes your life so much easier

if I go for something else in TPL, it would be pure XSLT.... which is a pain i the.... neck.. but still represents, IMO, a right path

The full set of java docs for all of the CS SDK methods are available there. Also, there is a cookbook document and some sample code as well.
