DCT and ms Access

coltrane30

Any suggestions on making a DCT that would read from a MS Access db and from this populate a dropdown for a DCT.

TeamSite version and platform?

I'll assume you're on a Windows platform... as long as you have the proper ODBC settings and can successfully write an executable to retrieve data from it (could be Perl, Java, etc.), you're good to go. You may want to use an inline to actually populate the drop-down list. There's some documentation about that, but the platform of the database never matters, as long as you set it up with ODBC. It's possible without ODBC, but not as straight-forward.

Assuming you invoke the JSP from a callout button on the DCT, this should be no problem at all. All you need to do is add the JSP and or servlet you are using to the Customer Toolkit (see the User Interface Customization Guide document) and invoke it when the callout button is pressed.

We basically have a generic callout servlet that all of our specific callouts inherit from and it works very easily. You have access to the Content Services SDK from within there as well should you need access to any specific TeamSite information.

could i, upon loading the dct have the jsp act as a child and get the data from the database and then populate this list. Next show the list in the dct(parent) without having to click a button to do so ?

Bill Klish

Don't think so. The only thing you could do before loading is run an inline script to do what you are mentioning. I don't believe you can easily use a JSP for that, as you would have to write a script that referenced your JSP. If you are tied to Java, you could just write a Java Application that you reference using the inline.

where can i find some documentation on inline script to do something like this ?

Bill Klish

Template Developers guide. Do a search on inline inside of it. You just include the <inline> element within your datacapture.cfg file.

alright i will check that out and thanks for your help

If your db does not change all that frequently, I would look at separating the two steps.

1. schedule a (for example) nightly feed from your db that is written out as an inline substitution or a javascript object for formapi

2. Pull in that inline substitution or javascript object in your DCT

You'll normally get a much more responsive interface if you take out any direct db calls everytime a DCT is loaded.

i have my jsp written and it accesses a mdb file.... but im having trouble with the syntax in the ipl file on how to use this jsp upon loading of the dct..... any more thoughts anyone ?

Bill Klish

Hmm. So you are trying to access a JSP page from an inline. Where does this JSP live? Is it part of the customer toolkit? I am wondering if there may be authentication issues. However, we need a little more information for how you have implemented this to come back with some possible reasons for the failure. What is being logged? Are you logging anything?

coltrane30

alright heres what im trying to do so far....

I made a cgi call out button that when clicked should call the jsp.
But it gives me an error.... which is
Command query23.jsp not found in the command descriptors.

Right now for ease i just have the jsp living in the same path as the ipl file.
