Virtualizing the Documentum environment as a step toward Private Cloud: Momentum Lisbon 2010

Hi Everyone -

Considering deploying Documentum applications into a virtual environment? Well, in this session (Wednesday, 2pm) I hope to convince you it's a great idea. We will discuss the trend around virtualizating business critical applications and then walk through a recent VMware Ready certification process the xCP product team undertook with our friends at VMware. You will see performance and scaling results, blueprint guidelines, and interesting findings based on our HA and vMotion tests.

If you already have specific questions around deploying Documentum applications on VMware vSphere please post them here. I will try to get answers in advance so we can discuss them in Lisbon.

Since we're using virtual Documentum in development and demo's for several years, doing so in test and eventually production, is a natural step forwards.

Especially if it includes 'unlimited' hoizontal scaling. And wondering of to some day in the future, also the ability to have a virtual repository (appearing to the end user as one) that is in fact running in a 'forrest' of virtual content servers. Are you going to suprise me in Lisbon or do I have to keep dreaming for a while?

Progressing even further, we end up in the Documentum Cloud. The thing that I will need there to make thing truly working, is multitenancy. How does that fit into your road to the cloud?

I looked at your question about a virtual repository running against a forrest of virtual content servers...and maybe you can provide an example to help clarify the idea? Regarding multi-tenancy, I will be discussing that in the xCP and Cloud session later on that Wednesday. Depending on your needs we different ways of approaching the opportunity. Looking forward to learning more about your questions...

Hi Randy,

Simplified it is something like this:

Virtual Image X a content server which holds Repository_A which has 3 cabinets (A1, A2, A3) and Repository_B which has 2 cabinets (B1 and B2)
Virtual Image Y a content server which holds Repository_C which has 2 cabinets (C1 and A3) and Repository_D which has 3 cabinets (C2, A2 and B2)

The virtual repository the end-user sees Repository_V which has 4 true cabinets and one virtual cabinet:

A1 from Repository_A
A2 as the join from Repository_A and _D
A3 as the join from Repository_A and _C
Virtua; cabinet V which is the join from these cabinets:
- B1 from Repository_B
- B2 as the join from Repository_B and _D
- C1 from Repository_C
- C2 from Repository_D

For the end-user everything appears as one, while at the back, it is devided over multiple images that provide optimum performance.

For end-users only interested in content from one particular cabinet, the entry could be that single Virtual Image

At some point you may need to move Repository_D into his own Virtual Image (preferable by a simple VMware clone operation) but keep everything appearing as is for the end-user.

Does this clarify the idea?

Yes...that does help clarify the idea. But, it seems like a frightful way to address underlying performance requirements. I say frightful because managing the virtual cabinets across repositories would surely entail management, security/authorization, and maintenance headaches. You should also look into attending Ed Bueche's performance session on Tuesday. I know he will address common virtualization "pitfalls", and he might have ideas on how to address your underlying concerns.

Looking forward to learning more next week. I'll see if Ed can chime in on this thread.

My company is interested in learning about best practices for virtualizing documentum so that we can more quickly build environments for upgrades and special testing scenarios.
