Full text searching error via API

We see this error when passing certain searches (but not all searches) through the API:

Error: Search.x= hr= 800400CD, Msg= Full text index is unavailable at this time

The same searches will always work properly when sent from the standard desktop client. Any ideas what causes this?

The error message generally means that your server does not have the (index server) fulltext searching running.
