Is templating backwards compatible?
BMK
Hi,
Hope that you can help with a quick question:
We are on TeamSite version 5.5 and have to create a few simple DCTs for a client who is on TeamSite version 5.0.
Due to site restrictions it would be handy if we could develop the DCTs on our environment before transferring them to the client.
Can you think of any issues that we may encounter with this approach? Are there any relevant technical differences between the versions that we need to be aware of?
I couldn't find anything in release notes etc. - hence this question.
Thanks in advance,
Barry

You would need to compare the datacapture.cfg DTDs for the two versions to see if there are any differences in the DCT structure to be aware of (I don't believe there were, but I don't know for sure), and also compare the documentation for the various PT tags as well.
You won't be able to use any FormAPI code either (I don't believe that was introduced until 5.5x)
Assuming you make sure you code your DCTs and PTs to the LCD (lowest-common-denominator) you should be fine.
And, of course, you and the organization you're working for should be aware that all TS 5.x products are now officially unsupported and you should try to upgrade as soon as possible if you want to continue to receive official support (or, for those of us old-timers such as myself - you'll be banking on our recollection of product versions we haven't touched in years...)

Keep in mind that both 5.0 and 5.5 are EOL, so you are going to have to upgrade to 6.0 at some point. There are some signficant differences between 5 and 6, the most annoying of which are the removal of the datatype hints for DAS from the DCT. Thankfully, 6.x will still validate older templates against the 5.x DTD.

And anorther one is the discontinuation of symbol-table & item-ref (though nobody from iwov is telling you this beforehand)

There are a number of webcasts that talk about the changes. You will probably want to look WAY back and find the ones about going from 5.5 to 6.0/1 and then the one from 6.1 to 6.5.
Here are some links to try:
