AddItenHandler on replicants

alanhill

All,

TS6.5,
Windows 2003.

This has been baffling me for ages now, so thought I'd see if anyone else could see the problem...

We have a dct which alows users to input link text along with URLs and hover text. They also specify if they want the link to open in a new (_blank) window, same window, or popup window (javascript function).

I've added some Form API to allow the popup options (scrollbars, height, width etc) to be hidden when not being used (to cut down on screen space).

I've got it working perfectly for fields not in replicants (by this I mean containers with min and max set, not actual <replicant> tags any more).

I'm trying to add an item handler to the 'What type of window' input (all of them no matter how many replicants there are). Documentation says I should be able to set it for all in one step (rather than looping through them all) but it doesn't seem to be working.

The DCT code:

<root-container name="root" location="root">
<container location="Top_Navigation_Items" name="Top_Navigation_Items" min="1" max="12">
Top Navigation Items

What type of window?

Do you want this link to open in the current browser window,
a new standard browser window or a popup browser window
(where certain properties such as window height and width can be customised)?

<radio required="t">

</radio>

<container location="PopUp" name="PopUp">
<inline command=" ...
</container>
</container>
</root-container>

My javascript code:

// Add event handler code to allow PopUp options to be shown/hidden by clicking on
// WindowType radio buttons
//
IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler("root/Top_Navigation_Items/WindowType","onItemChange",LoopReplicants);

function LoopReplicants()
{
// Loop through replicants and get children out
//
replicants =IWDatacapture.getItem("/root/Top_Navigation_Items").getChildren();

for (var i =0;i <replicants.length ;i++)
{
iToCheck = IWDatacapture.getItem(replicants.getName()+'/WindowType')
iToChange = IWDatacapture.getItem(replicants.getName()+'/PopUp')
alert("DEBUG: Item to Check: "+iToCheck+" : Item to Change: "+iToChange);
ShowHideReplicantPopUpOptions(iToCheck,iToChange) -- this is a function which checks the property of the radio buttons and sets the visible property of the other container accordingly - this all works OK for non-replicants.
}
}

The main bit that appears to be not working is the AddItemHandler code at the top - I've got another handler being set on an item not in a replicant and it works fine.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Alan, you should be able to add an item handler an item in all replicants. Just try a simple example like this and see if the alert shows up:

IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler('/root/Top_Navigation_Items/WindowType', 'onItemChange', alertItemName);

function alertItemName(itemObject)
{
    alert(itemObject.getName());
}

If you're still having problems, post your DCT and javascript and someone might be able to help you more.

Jeff,

Thanks for the assistance, I did try that already - I create a small script that just output the usual 'Hello World'. Since your post I've added the itemName as an argument and tried to output that, but it's coming up as undefined.

Also, I notice that rather than set it as an event handler, it actually runs the function on startup.

Bizarre indeed...

I think you need to declare your function as having a parameter - which is the actual item that triggered the event:function LoopReplicants(item)
{
// Loop through replicants and get children out
//
replicants = IWDatacapture.getItem("/root/Top_Navigation_Items").getChildren();
...
}Whether or not this is really what you want to do - I don't know. Are you trying to change all instances of this replicant every time one instance of this particular item in any instance of the replicant changes?

All,

Sorry, programmers 101 I'm afraid...what a daft mistake.

I missed the '/' off the front of 'root'. Now I've corrected that it works spot on.

I couldn't see the wood for the trees.

Fish, it is pretty much what I was trying to do - whenever someone changes on instance, there's no harm in refreshing all of the popup options' visibilities. Ideally you'd just change the one the user was working on, but deadlines mean leaving it the way it is.

Alan,

One thing you should do in all of your formapi scripts is use the onFormInit form handler to handle all of your intitial javascript:

IWEventRegistry.addFormHandler("onFormInit", initializeDct());

function initializeDct()
{
    IWEventRegistry.addItemHandler('/root/Top_Navigation_Items/WindowType', 'onItemChange', alertItemName);
}

This will ensure the form has been properly loaded before executing any of your formapi. And I had noticed that you had missed the / as well, that's why I had included it in my small formapi I posted for you to try out, along with the fact that you weren't taking advantage of the item object being passed in,

.

Glad you got it working.

Jeff,

Many thanks for the hint, I'd started using an init() function but this AddFormHandler looks a bit better.

I appreciate the feedback.
