Can I apply retention policy on a document through SBO

Hi all,

I need to apply retention policy (Individual, has condition) on the documents of a custom type. I will be applying different retention policy based on custom attribute values. Which approach should I follow?

writing a TBO for this object type and calling a custom SBO which will apply retention policy on the documents (or)
writing a CS job method through which I can apply retention policy.

Also, can you please let me know on how to get started in either cases.
