TS6.5 Launchpad on Mac OSX

mick

hi

i'm having problems running launchpad on Mac OSX - when trying to edit/download a file the following error occurs and the file is not downloaded. the same error happens with Firefox, Mozilla and Safari.

Error downloading file [/path/to/local/file/location] from TeamSite server: Error Length Required connecting to 'http://[teamsite]/iw-cc/launchpad/download'

has anyone seen this before?
can anyone suggest a fix?

were running:
TS 6.5 SP1 on Solaris
Mac OSX 10.4.5
Firefox 1.5.0.1
Mozilla 1.7.12
Safari 2.0.3

regards
michaela :-)

I use Tiger and have not had any problems with Launchpad -- do you have a JRE installed? I'm using J2SE 1.4.2 and I'm wondering if the applet on yours isn't able to be initialized properly?

ok, it took me a while to figure this out but the problem seems to be with Java's support for proxy server configuration.

we work behind a firewall and use a proxy server for internet access. so, i hear you say, i shouldn't need to access the internet for launchpad. well, that's correct but Java doesn't know this - so it tries to use the proxy server anyway - and this causes an error when launchpad tries to download a file from the Teamsite server. Java reads the proxy configuration that you set in System Preferences -> Network but it looks as though it ignores any domains entered in the bypass proxy field - doh!

I've set up another network location with no proxy server configuration and launchpad is now working - i just have to remember to change locations when i want to use launchpad. Only problem is, i can't use the internet at the same time. Oh well, we can't have everything.

You should probably open a case with Support and let them chew on this for a while - they may be able to figure out a solution (either for now or for the future) that would simplify matters with respect to LaunchPad. (and if they cannot - you're no worse off)

for anyone else having the same problem: i've found a better solution than changing locations - you just need to set a Java runtime parameter to let Java know what hosts to bypass the proxy for.

you can edit your Java Plugin preferences by using an application that lives in Applications/Utilities/Java (choose the app that corresponds to the version of Java you want to use - i'm currently using J2SE 5.0 with no problems).

enter something like:

-Dhttp.nonProxyHosts="*.your.internal.domain|another.host.name|etc"

into the runtime parameters.

i'm now much happier - i can edit content on my Mac!
