Execute windows system command using external task.

I tried to execute a windows system command using an external task. It fails to execute due to permission problems. Does anybody know a workaround to this issue.

I am trying to execute something like this within my ipl file

my $cmd = "C:\\iw-home\\local\\config\\wft\\fnni\\infrastructure_deploy\\infrastructure_file_copy.bat";

debug ("Batch file path: $cmd\n",5);

my $result = &run($cmd,25);

The batch file contains a xcopy command.

xcopy Y:\default\main\infrastructure_branch\WORKAREA\shared_wa\fnnet\* Y:\default\main\infrastructure_branch\WORKAREA\shared_wa\themes /E/Q/Y

Whats the errorr message when executing the batch file from an external task?

Does the user executing the external task have the permissions to read the source file and have write permession to the target directory?

Yes, the user executing the external task has permissions to read the source file and has write permissions to the target directory. It does not give me a specific error. But I know it is a permission error. Because I can manually execute the ipl on the command line with the workflow id and task id and it works well.

That sounds more like an environment issue than a permissions issue (though I don't rule out permissions as playing a part here).

Add code to your script to record all the environment information in a debugging file.
- Run your script from the command line.
- Run your script from the workflow.
- Compare output.

Well, it really depends on the requirement (doesn't it always (-: )

If situation is such that 'sample task' is to be executed again as in a loop then, you will be executing the same task again and again, depending upon the number of times it is looped back.

Since your workflow skeleton defines a logical flow of tasks, if the Job moves on beyond a point from where there is no logical loop back, then you will need to define another external task even for executing the same command.

External tasks on windows runs as the SYSTEM user and not as the user who owns the externaltask. That might be the issue here.

Alternatively - you can build logic into your externaltask script that understands from which task it was called so that it knows which successorset to activate upon completion - in that way you could use the same externaltask in multiple places within the same workflow process and have it "do the right thing"

It's more a question of requirements and design than whether or not you can do it.

Actually - I still believe you can do it with a single externaltask:

E=externaltask
(A)->(E)->(B)->(E)->(C)->(E)->(D)

The above would work as long as tasks B & C set something, like a job variable, that can be used by the script run from task E to determine whether it's callback is 0 (B), 1 (C), or 2 (D) - and thus you could use the same script and the same task definition itself, multiple times within the same workflow.

has anyone gotten around this so that the files being processed in the workflow show up in teamsite as last being modified by the user and not the system account? I was thinking maybe to reset the permissions using the id that is the owner of the external task doing the processing?

Even resting the permissions as the external task owner the files will be shown as Modified by SYSTEM user in either CC PRO or CC STD TeamSite interface. As the last user that modified or touched the files is SYSTEM account.

Have you checked with Support? This is, I believe, a known bug - but I also thought it was fixed in one of the SP's or releases (don't remember which) - if so, then an upgrade will solve this problem (though potentially bring others along for the ride)

Try modifying any of your file... by using a CLT. Check if you get the same issue from that front as well.If no, then debug your external task else... Go on Ghoti's way.
