Compound Document via xCP

Hi There,

I have always seen business coming in with requirement that more or less maps to the concept of compound document- they want different people to

work on different sections of a document and then finaly combine this chunks of document to form the final Document.

I've seen XMetal kind of offering similar functionalities but does xCP address this kind of requirement?

I understand it might not have a readymade solution but was wondering it this can be implemented via a form based solution where there will

be different forms for each sections and the finaly combine these data to form a pdf?

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Compound documents are supported using Virtual Document feature in Webtop. Unfortunately, this feature is not available through TaskSpace natively. You could try to see if you can embedded the VDM component as custom tab in TaskSpace. I havent done this before, so I cant give you any detail instructions.

Thank you Johnny. I will try that. Another option that I'm trying to verify if I can store different sections as XML chunks and then finally combine them.

You can store your content as xml chunks, but how do you plan on assembling them - especially in the proper sequence? Thats what virtual document feature provides - proper sequencing.

Got you. Do you think Arbortext will fit in well as an XML editor for editing these xml chunks ?

From what I remember, Arbortext is fine for xml authoring. My question is that do they have integration with xCP. The last time I saw their demo it was with their client app - similar to word.

I'm an Arbortext expert, but I've been away from Documentum long enough that I don't recognize the new branding.There is a Documentum WDK adapter that you can get free of charge from Arbortext. It allows you to browse into Documentum from inside Arbortext Editor. Lots of people are using it. Happy to discuss offline if any of this is relevant or applicable.

No they do not have any integration with xCP. In fact after much mulling, I think xCP might be an over kill for it. I am looking forward to build an XML application and use webtop and have XML chunks edited via Arbortext- Old School.

Curious, if you are going to use Arbortext as client for authoring XML chuncks, why even bother using Webtop? Not sure what kind of integration Arbortext is providing today, but EMC supports fat client integration into the repository via their My Documentum for Desktop product (used to be known as File Sharing Services). It integrates directly with Windows Explorer, so within Arbortext, the repository looks like a shared drive.

We are using workflow and I do not think MyDocumentum desktop provides inbox features. I could use MyDocumentum just for editng purposes and WebTop for inbox feature but then we are also using CenterStage for Collaboration purpose. So I guess there will be too many different UIs which might eventualy confuse the users.

Also, from a maintenance stand point during upgrade we will have to upgrade MyDocumentum in every desktop that uses it. It wil be a nightmare. Arbortext is already suported by the helpdesk and they have SMS packages to push upgrades.

Arbortext does have some WDK integration but I am not planning to use it. Over all these years I have learned it the hard way the pain of a tightly coupled system. Decoupled systems are much much easier to maintain and upgrade with minimum outage.

Users can Edit their Documents from WebTop and if they set the preferences correctly then WebTop can automatically open up Arbortext editor for them when they click "Edit".

Any toughts? Please suggest.

Your suggestion works. It just means that the user has to checkin the document via Webtop, instead of Arbortext.

AFAIK, MyD for desktop does not support virtual docs or xml app.
