Migrating 5.5.2 UI .ipl to 6.5

After spending numerous hours RTFM and much trial-and-error, I'm stuck trying to get a custom UI entry migrated from 5.5.2 to 6.5 on Solaris.

The menu entry appears just fine, but I cannot get it to start executing the .ipl. On my 5.5.2 server, there is a symlink for each "custom developed" UI .ipl from /ts-home/httpd/iw-bin to /config/interwoven/httpd/iw-bin; however, I made a decision to make a single symlink for /tshome/httpd/bin/upiw-bin to point to /config/interwoven/httpd/iw-bin so that my custom iw-bin directory appears as a subdirectory of iw-bin.

Here is what is in ui_custom.xml:

The window opens fine, but I get an Internal Server Error - complete with nothing in any log file I can find. The window "seems" to open with the correct url: http://server/iw-cc/iw-bin/iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi/upiw-bin/template_copier.ipl

Any thoughts where to begin? I also tried setting ui_custom.xml to have url="/iw-bin/upiw-bin/template_copier.ipl" , but that just gave me a "Forbidden" error message.

Assuming trivia is taken care of, your mode is 555(r-x) at least, cd is allowed in directories, etc…
If I were you I would pick one of the custom scripts as POC and start from there.

Place it under iwhome/httpd/iw-bin, create CGI counterpart in the same place and modify url to something like
url="/iw-bin/wdpro_menu.ipl/template_copier.cgi". It's standard, it's documented and supported etc, etc...
After you got that working start playing with symlinks and custom iw-bin. Much easier by baby steps I think

Problem is that this is a locked-down server and I don't have access to iwhome/httpd/iw-bin except through a SysAdmin; that's a "last resort".

The way that ISCBorisB describes is far and away the easiest way to get your menus working. We ran into the same issue when we went from 5.5.2 to 6.1 where it was calling .ipl's through the menu in the past. All we had to do was drop in the cgi and rename it to have the exact same name as the ipl program and then just change the called url to point at the cgi, and viola, it worked!

well, I think you made a wrong decision ;-)

In 5.5.2 a Custom Menu Item (CMI) that was listed under iw.cfg, was automatically wrapped by iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi (which took care of impersonation, i.e. running the script as a process owned by the user invoking it). iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi was limited in that it could only wrap scripts that are in the same folder as itself.

Now, in 6.x, you have the choice to wrap, or not to wrap... in fact, you can choose no wrapper at all (url="/iw-bin/(dir/)*file.cgi"), or wrap for impersonation (url=/iw-bin/iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi/file.cgi) or wrap to emulate 5.5.2 (url=/iw-bin/wdpro_menu.ipl/file.cgi).

Important to know is that wdpro_menu.ipl will rearrange the incoming CGI variables AND it will pass on to iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi/file.cgi (so not to file.cgi), so it automagically includes the impersonation wrapper, with its no-subfolder limitation.

Of course, the whole ts65 documentation is utterly silent about iw_cgi_wrapper.cgi Smiley Sad

and what it does, but if you know TS 5.5.2 and if you read the code in wdpro_menu.ipl, you find out what I wrote above.

Finally, it's good to know also that CGI-callouts (the other reason to use CGI in TS, apart from Custom Menu) are not automagically wrapped by anything, and so they can be in any subfolder of iw-bin

So, you should go back to using a symlink per cgi, or you should write your CGI so that you don't need wrapper.... but since you probably want impersonation, that's tricky.
