How to force ucf client to use a specific JRE version

Hello All,

I would like to know if there is a way to set the ucf client to use a spécifique version?

For further details: some of our users have two or more version of JRE installing on their desktop. I would like to write a script to check all JRE installed on the client machine and set the ucf client to use the best one.

From my limited understanding this wouldnt be possible, the clients machine has a primary java runtime and uses that whenever generic "java" calls are made.

I am thinking if ucf always use the java version specified in 'ucf.installs.config.xml' file, I can write a script to find all version deployed on the client desktop and overide this file with the correcte version. It is just an idea. Do you have an other idea? or how that is possible?

a) Odds are your IT department already audits the software installed on users PCs. If not do so, it probably will be cheaper and more useful to IT department that a custom script. Get that report and find out the java in use. Methinks hardcoding a java version is stupid. Better to ensure that all users have at least the supported version of java.

b) The client side UCF config file is generated automatically from details in the server side UCF config file "ucf.installer.config.xml". Changing the version number in the following section will cause the client setting to be overwritten.

At a guess the WDK reference manual should have more details on these settings

Any client that has mutliple java runtimes installed has one that is setup as the primary, i believe this is just done by the first one that shows up in the PATH environemnt variable. I think having the IT department like the other poster said make sure they have the version you need is probably the best way to go if you really need that kind of control.

You can force download the JRE version to the client if the specified version is not there. This can be done by modifying ucf.installer.config.xml.

However, user need to have atleast (any version) one runtime to download (activate) the UCF process.

I think the fact to setup the app.xml to force downloading and installing a specific version is a good idea. But I am wondering due to the fact that our end users do not have admin right the installation will probably fail. Am I wrong?

You are the clever one.... Yes it would fail.... I think it was around the version 6 release that EMC figured out you could work around this and get a private jre to download and install for UCF use only....

but seriously.... get your IT department to roll out a standard JRE for all clients.... Some options for doing that in automated fashion are in
