Can workflow update files?
BMK
Can a task in a workflow update data in a DCR and its associated XML file?
We capture expiry date in DCRs and XML files created by our DCTs. When these files are submitted by the workflow to the area who approve content, they should have the ability to set or change the expiry date. Can a task in the workflow do this, and if so - would it change the 'last modified by' information of the file(s)?

"Yes" to both questions. You can use the "touch" command to get around the consequence of file modification time.

If the date information is stored *in* the DCR - then you can either allow a user to edit the DCR (usertask) or programmatically alter the contents of the DCR (externaltask or cgitask with appropriate scripting).
If you set the owner of the externaltask or cgitask to be the owner of the person you want to have the 'last modified by' - it should do the right thing on Unix - but it might not work correctly on Windows (there have been a number of issues reported on Windows where the last modified by value gets set to SYSTEM or some such)

Fish,
You're absolutely right in that a Windows installation will reflect that the file was modified by SYSTEM. But, since BMK gave no information as to what s/he is working on...
