grep the 1st word in pattern matching

cc96ai

I would like to grep the 1st world from senetense
can I do it on pattern matching?

I used substr in the following code.
my $title1 = $title;
my $title2 = "";

if ( $title =~ m/\s/) {
$title1 = substr( $title, 0 , index( $title, " ")+1);
$title2 = substr( $title, index( $title, " ")+1, length ($title) ) ;
}

I think this might be better:my $title1 = $title;
$title1 =~ s|^\s+||; # remove leading white-space if any
if ($title1 =~ /\s/){ # $title1 contains white-space somewhere
$title1 =~ s|\s.*$||; # remove the first white-space found and everything following
}Actually you could simplify the if clause above and just make it:$title =~ s|\s*$||;since, if there is no white-space it will not change anything, and if there is white-space it will have the desired effect. If you are sure there is no leading white-space, you could simplify the entire thing into:(my $title1 = $title) =~ s|\s.*$||;

Using word boundaries should do the trick - it will handle the various patterns

if ($title =~ m/\b([^\b]+?)\b/ )
{
    print "found first word: $1\n";
}
else
{
    print "no words found\n";
}
