WDK 6.0 - Customization components of Documentum Administrator

I know that I can include Documentum Administrator elements to my WDK application. I need to include the component "Groups". The problem is that the user asked me if is possible to add some functionalities to these components, for example "Delete assignation". I think that it´s a bit more sensible to change the functionality to Document Administrator component that Webtop components, so maibe I should avoid this kind of things..

Somebody knows if is normal to customize components that comes from Documentum Administrator?.

- What I meant was that if you customize DA and you later have problems, if you try to contact EMC and submit a support ticket, they will immediately say that customizing DA is not supported and close your ticket. If you are willing to risk this, then you should be able to customize DA like Webtop, since both are built on the WDK. I do NOT recommend this, but I understand sometimes clients have strict requirements. You just need to explain the risks of going down this path.

no it is not normal

group editing is availbable in Webtop, if you are logged in as a user with administrator role and at least create group privilege

yes, you´re right: the Group element is an standard element that comes from Webtop, not DA although DA has it too..I was confused, thanks.

But is it possible to include the elements from DA, from example the element "Users" localized in the Documentum Administrator inside the folder Administration/Users Management/??. Or adding Documentum Administrator elements is not possible....?

DA nodes/code are not available in standard webtop.war file, so what you asking is not possible. What are you trying to do? Three is DA feature called Administrator Access Set that allows you to configure what DA nodes are available to a specific role, such that you can "dumb down" DA and allow show specific nodes in DA node tree to specific role. The user would still have to log into DA to see this.

- Most users of webtop are assume to be a normal/regular user. The user node (by default) gives you the ability to create new user AND the ability to assign them client capability of System Admin or Superuser. This is why User node is not exposed via Webtop.

- Yes, this is what I suggested.

- Yes, this is just configuring.

- You can customize DA components using same WDK customization strategy as Webtop; however, any issues you have with DA will NOT be supported once you have customized it.

Thank you John, it has been a very good explanation. Only I don´t understand well the last thing you told "any issues you have with DA will NOT be supported once you have customized it.". That means that I don´t have a custom layout in DA like I have in Webtop?. If it is like that, I guess you would recomend me that I tell to the user that it´s a very bad idea to make a DA customization no??

It would be a lot of work just to satisfy one user. In my mind a complete waste of time.

The simplest solution, is to give the user a second user account and then grant them only enough privliges for them to do their administration work. This approach is used by many companies.

This approach will be far better as:

* Account can be marked inactive if user leaves the company

* Only the permission they require needs to be granted, in this case Greate Group, is only required

* Auditing can be enabled for the admin accounts, so any changes they do can be tracked

* If they make changes to documents, then it will be visible in Modifier attribute...

* No customisation is required

Please before asking any more question, go read the manuals, at least check out "EMC Documentum Content Server Version XX Fundamentals Guide", read the chapter on "Security Services", in particular "User privileges", "Auditing and tracing"
