Locks in eventsubsystem database

I have a server running 6.5SP1 that is experiencing some difficulty with the event subsystem. For some reason, there will occasionally be a long running process that blocks other processes. When that happens, DAS stops working (you might expect that) as do timeout transitions on workflows (that sort of surprised me). The longest I've let it run when this happened was about six hours which didn't clear the problem. Usually stopping and restarting the event subsystem will clear the blocking lock, but not always - sometimes it comes up hosed as soon as it starts.

We're using MSSQL for the db.

I've had a case open with support for about a week, but I'm not getting much satisfaction from that. One of my biggest problems is that the issue seems to be non-deterministic. I haven't found a set of steps that can guarantee that the issue will occur yet.

I welcome any thoughts, especially from folks who might have some OpenJMS background.

which describes the same behaviour with the od event subsystem. It sounds like there is a workaround. I'm trying to get support to validate that they think that is our specific problem and that the workaround is approved.
