Calling Documentum from within Oracle?

Hi, folks,

I have a Oracle trigger that needs to getcontent from an object when it detects a metadata change. I am pretty sure there is a way to invoke Documentum from within Oracle, but would appreciate any advice on how to do it. This is all running on Solaris, if that makes a difference.

I'm not sure that I understand what your requirements are. Is the Oracle DB the same DB that's used to host Documentum metadata? What are you doing with the content - exporting it to another system?

Hi, Mark,

I know I have seen this customization before, but I don't remember how it worked. In the D5 days, you would use this sort of trick to record old and new values in the audit trail. When the my_type_s table was changed, you would shell out to Documentum and call the Audit method to create a dm_audittrail object that would show up in the History tab of the Properties.

Old and new values are built-in to D6, but the need still comes up. For example, in this case we want to get something out of the XML in a SmartList object. The object properties have some of the information, like the number of rows returned. We can get those without leaving Oracle. But, the details of the query are buried in the object's contents. For that we need DFC. Another use would be to have Oracle detect changed data in a dictionary table and have a trigger invoke a Documentum server method to process it.

The exact requirements are confidential, of course.

And yes, it's the same Oracle instance that is running the Docbase. Not necessarily the same schema, though. In the case of the XML content, it's the Docbase schema, but in the case of the dictionary tables, they might be separate from the Docbase.
