Customising a viewset: setting attributes on fields

I am customising a viewset and want to know if there is a reference for setting the attributes on fields?

Specifically I want to have a select box that is a drop down and not a multi select (with pop-up page) and I would also like to set the default value for a select box (either dropdown or multi).

But generally, a reference for what all the attributes do for each field type would be extremely helpful!

I'm also interested in setting a default value from a metadata table. Did you ever learn of any options to do so?
