DevNet podcast??

System

Okay, so I admit that I've been trying to think of any and every inane subject matter that might serve well as a podcast even though its total number of subscribers might never exceed the number of fingers on my hand (and to be technical, I'm not including my thumb because it's not a finger and I'll also leave out my pinky since it's almost useless anyway so the max number to which I'm referring is 3).

What does the DevNet community think of a DevNet podcast? I'll volunteer to do the whole thing, I don't care -- but I'm interested in hearing feedback and ideas on the topic. Such features might include, "Worst post of the week" and "Adam's most inspired post for the week" as well as that from Jeff. Sounds pretty lame so far, I know, which is why I'm interested in hearing other ideas.

Haha, I think you're on crack...

That being said, if I can be of any help, feel free to ask... and I will feel free to say no, Smiley Wink

Ummm, well okay thank you for the

constructive comment but I'm looking for some "real" feedback Smiley Tongue

Haha, you know I'm not constructive...

I think you're probably wrong about the number of subscribers though. If you can get some decent content, I think at least 4 people will watch it, Smiley Very Happy

. But seriously, I think it will be more than you think. I'm not a big podcast person, so can't say I'd be one of them, but for you Dave, anything  .

I'm not really sure what kind of content you could have though on your own, but if you work with Heather, you could talk about upcoming web casts, user groups, conferences, releases, etc.

That better? Smiley Tongue

That's kinda what I mean -- and with a purely audio platform, your excessive use of smilies would be lost on all of us: another plus. I'm interested to know what people might be interested in. I know that some of the more frequent contributors treat DevNet like crack and can't get enough so they might like to listen to weekly summaries or whatever. Whomever could also incorporate a weekly development tip or editorial.

Sounds like a lot of work for someone to do if they aren't getting paid... DevNet is similar, but you can set your own schedule... Committing to a weekly thing sounds like it should be a paid position... I nominate Heather, Smiley Wink

Wellllll.... I agree that it's a deal of work but my thought on this is that others might contribute to, say, nominate the worst post of the week and provide ideas for what the weekly tip might be. When I was picturing this, I wasn't picturing a paid position and it seems as though Heather has enough on her plate, anyway.

Besides, maybe Interwoven could come up with a product that helps companies manage and maintain their own podcasts. Sort of like a MediaBin but specifically for podcasts. Dunno... that's why this is the "Bit Bucket".

FWIW - I'm not sure what kind of audio-only content would really be that worthwhile.

You could try to go over rules of graceful posting on DevNet (making sure to preview posts with code in them to ensure they show up, not cross-posting, putting posts in their proper forums, including relevant information, etc.) - but it would be difficult to describe how to properly format posts or how to write code to do "this" or "that".

If you want to ridicule posters for the worst post of the week - well, feel free, it might be worth a laugh or too - but I don't see it really sustaining a following.

About the only thing I can think of that might prove interesting fodder for podcasts in the near future would be someone providing coverage of GearUp and suggesting which sessions in which tracks were the most useful and therefore worth following up on when the content gets posted to DevNet - but even that's kind of short-lived.

You can do a repeating broadcast about how the F in RTFM is really "silent" and not intended to be interpreted at face-value against the recipient of the suggestion ;-)

I tend to think that a video podcast would be even more frightening although it would assist in showing code fragments, etc. But then, the audio might give me or someone else the opportunity to read obfuscated Perl code character-by-character. Good times, good times...

I think my service provider would kill me if I were to podcast the worst posts just to ridicule people. I'm already working on a video podcast for my cooking site which will likely eat much of the bandwidth allocated to me.

Not to mention you'd probably have to do daily or hourly podcasts just to keep up. You'd probably have to implement some rule where you can only make fun of someone once a week or once a month, otherwise you'd have too much content. Otherwise I might get a complex when you start coming out with podcasts on a daily basis talking about that jbonifaci guy that is always on crack... Smiley Very Happy

I was kinda thinking about that actually. With your permission, of course, I might do a "Who's on crack" segment but would probably find myself referencing my own posts more often than I would care to admit. So, nevermind.

I am glad you guys are asking about this. It is something we are going to look into next month after GearUp. I couldn't conceive of anyone finding audio podcasts reviewing code very interesting to listen to, but I am curious if you guys would enjoy video podcasts of the webcasts? or of GearUp Sessions after the event?

Thanks,
Heather

Sure would. Thanks, Heather. Also, let me know if I can help with the production of this stuff. I won't be at GearUp but I do a fair amount of video editing on my Mac.

Hi Dave,

I am sorry to hear that you won't be at GearUp, but I will contact you about podcasts after I return from GearUp. I am definitely interested in seeing whether there would be interest in this. Smiley Happy

On another semi-similar note about new features on DevNet, is anyone interested in Blogs on DevNet? and if yes, who would you be interested in reading about? Interwoven engineering, your peers on DevNet, me or Lissa, Product Management?

Thanks,

Heather

Personally, it seems that DevNet's core functionality is too blog-like for a separate blog to make much sense. I mean, fish gives advice and has his own little following, Jeff keeps accusing me of being on crack and Dave Smith, when he posts anymore, makes people feel embarassed or hurt  it's like our own little sitcom around here. So, what might a blog add to DevNet?

miletwo

I would personally love to see the webcasts posted as video podcast. Sounds like much fun. Hey Heather, any chance that the tracks from GU will be available post facto in this format?

See you at GearUP!
