Development Tools

I have been creating a little library of tools which help me do TeamSite development (Perl, XML, etc) at my various contract jobs. I was wondering if there's any products/programs/tools that anyone here finds particularly useful themselves. Here is a list of utils that I have in my arsenal:

DevNet
Regex Buddy (download.com)
TextPad (www.fabsoft.com) - Pixel Ruler
Toggle Borders (dana.ucc.nau.edu) - Useful? IE extensions
WSFTP Pro (www.ssh.com) - Shell to SSH servers. Better than Putty.

SecureCRT is a slightly less expensive SSH utility

xmllint for doing xml stuff (reformatting/finding errors/etc)
SquirrelSql for sql queries
cygwin for when you are forced to use windows

Visio - Great for diagrams of workflows and even to layout DCTs look/feel if you have the right stencils
TOAD - (safari.oreilly.com) - Online access to many O'Reilly books.

Hmm - GUI's I can understand - though perhaps more specifically, 'mice' - but Emacs? I'd hardly associate Emacs with weak minds (I wouldn't associate vim with weak minds eaither for that mater).

While I prefer VI to emacs, I love my UltraEdit. In fact, I love it so much, I... oh, wait... okay, now I know how we got started with this.

My opnion - VI is great, and I keep using it.. especially in our jobs this is the only thing that is available from the command line....

I myself use EditPlus... I kind of dislike the author of the UltraEdit....

as since we have perl, sed and awk are kind of obsolete, IMO....

Actually no.

I write a great deal of perl, but I still use sed now and then.

If you need to make a change to a file, it is a one line exec from perl. As opposed to
opening, reading, regexing, writing and closing.

Granted anything complex I will do in Perl, but simple stuff is easier with awk and sed.

& I am not that much older than you. I think.

Now you are really old if you use abd (gutsy as well)

I haven't used sed and awk in a while, as I haven't worked with unix in a while, but they are both very useful still. I used to work for a marketing research firm and used these often for data manipulation. Yes, it's much more readable in perl, but for many things sed and awk are going to perform much better.

it is an all-pupose debugger, but also doubles as a binary editor.

good for (simple) patching executables, (i.e. something that has a variable
that was used as a duration for a eval copy, one could adb the executable to change the
duration very long). Not that I would ever do somethign like that. :-)
