Yikes. That is like 3-4 years between release dates! It is not going to be easy to list all the differences. Also, why are you comparing 6.1? 6.5 is very stable and would be the best migration path. Anyway, some of the big enhancements include:
o multistore
o improved backing store (faster)
o 4.5 is EOL'd
o developer friendly API (cssdk)
o improved templating GUI
o FormAPI
o different UI
o 4.5 is EOL'd
o iwprocessd to fork external workflow commands (solaris only)
o support for recent OS's
o tons of misc. bug fixes, along with a few new bugs
o Linux support--well, developer support anyway
o perl 5.8
o Launchpad is a java app
o enhanced ui customization
o oh, and 4.5 is EOL'd

and you are actually looking at that kind of an upgrade,
the upgrade path is not going to be *straight* Smiley Very Happy

and either you will need to research on it a bit or have the support folks chalk out one for you.

Why do you want to know?
How much detail are you looking for?
In what area(s) of the product are you talking about?

Someone said 3-4 years - but that's incorrect. 4.5 was, I believe, released in 2000 - so that's 6 years difference.
4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 5.5.2, 6.0, 6.1, 6.5 -- there might have been a 4.7 too - but I can't remember right now - plus there were the various SP levels and patches for each of the various releases.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the underlying basics of the product in terms of its usage has remained fairly consistant throughout the releases - but the actual details of implementation, especially for customization have changed significantly.

If you really need information about this - you should contact Interwoven (either Support or Sales) to see if they can get you official information.

And having done an upgrade from 4.5 to 6.5, it is not trivial.

Assume your backingstore is toast, create a new one and import some editions.

Also, OpenDeploy is totally different, the configs will need to be rewritten, though I was able to script it. Most config files will need to be updated.

You should definitely look at upgrading to TeamSite 6.5 or maybe even TS 6.7.0 instead of TS 6.1. We will be announcing an EOL of TS 6.1 when we ship TS 6.7.0 at the end of this week. You will have a 12 month support period, but if you are looking for an upgrade path, I would not recommend TS 6.1 at this time given its pending EOL.

Oh all right - I suppose that makes it a bit more accurate. ;-)

However - I still have to wonder about *why* this information is being sought - since the original post-er (rohitspathak123) never clarified the rationale beyond saying that s/he was *not* looking to migrate content between two such disparate versions.

I think jed put it best by implying that one could fill a book with differences between 4.5 and 6.1 and that someone doing an analysis towards a migration between the two might be better served by looking at differences between one or more iterative versions. That is, between 4.5 and 5.5.2 and then 5.5.2 and 6.1.

Because they aren't worried about upgrading and are asking about 6.1 and not 6.5 or 6.7, I would guess they are trying to get a job developing in 6.1 and haven't used any version of TeamSite since 4.5.

To the best of my knowledge there is no direct upgrade/conversion path from 4.5 to 6.5 without going through 5.5.2.

If you can just copy the latest editions then you can install 6.5 on another server, import the latest code you have and then start working on the other files (workflows, deployments, etc). That will save you at least 2 weeks.

Chances are that during the course of this upgrade, a good number of items could be marked for further work to improve the customizations beyond just a simplistic "upgrade so they'll work in the new environment" - e.g., a lot of templating stuff that was either not possible or only possible via direct DCT configuration is now possible to do with FormAPI. This kind of thing should not be done as part of the upgrade/conversion process - but should be well documented for work to be done after the upgrade conversion process has been completed successfully.

Frankly, if you don't know what you're doing / don't have a decent working knowledge of the old and new versions of the products, I think you can expect to multiply the estimates above by at least 2 - even if you post every single question you have about the process to these forums (which may or may not get answered since this is the kind of stuff for which consultants exist and it kind of goes against the grain to provide all of our expertise for free - especially to someone else who is getting paid to do it).

What are the steps I have to take
What i have got is this
1) First we have to move all files from teamsite 4.5 to ts 5.5
(directly copying or using any script...i am not sure)
2) Than identify the open and data deploy scripts used in the project
and then upgrade them to newer version
3) ....yet to be known

Ghoti I am ready to work hard no matter how much effort it takes...i m ready for it,,,,just i want direction...and as there are no money related benefits...it is for upgrading my product only designed by some one else.....
