Excluding a document type in a search

Is there some way we can create a negative search criteria.

We have some matters which have > 10000 documents in the correspondence folder. We'd like to create a few search folders which show all documents, without e-mails, between certain date ranges.

The only way I seem to be able to do this is a search where the criteria is all the document types except e-mail. This could miss things if document types are added in the future.

Press the button "return all documents" i n the top of youre search screen (in the restrict search to) and select the answer Eclude emails.
