When you use the browser element and select a file in the dialog, it initially shows up only as that file name but once you confirm that selection, the entire relative path of the file shows in the browser text box. Is there a way to disable the entire path and to show only the file name in that box after selection?

use formapi to change the value of the element.

This happens since your Workarea is normally the docroot unless you have remapped it and I think it is the default behaviour.
so if you need just the file name, you will have to use formapi to chop the path to size before saving the record.

You can also choose to use cgi-callout which i am using for the same requirement.

You're probably better off leaving the full relative path there and changing it, if needed, when generating a page with a PT.
However, if that truly doesn't work for you - then the suggestions of FormAPI and/or creating your own callout for performing the browsing function are probably the way to go.
