Template Based Email

Hi There,

I am using Template based email.

I have modified the default author_submit workflow to match client requirement. I have dropdown list of approvers based on which the email has to be sent.

I have a seprate DCR which has list of approvers. Using TeamSite::XMLparser->new();, I have made list of approvers. How can I send mail to the selected approver?

Can anyone help me?

Depnds on when you want to do it. You can write a perl script and use Mail::Mailer

It happens, when the author selects the files and do a submit.

The author is give with a UI having Description and list of apporvers.

Can you throw more light on this?

You can find several examples on the server __IW_HOME__/local/config/wft/solutions folder.

You could also just look at iw_send_email.ipl although that script is not without its problems. Just see how the "to" list is compiled and also look at task_output xml from the email task.

Dave - I believe you mean iwsend_mail.ipl (or perhaps the more ancient iwsend_owner_mail.ipl or iwsend_servlet_mail.ipl?)

As far as I know - the only real "problem" in iwsend_mail.ipl (which I hope has been fixed since I last worked on it) was that it didn't include newlines in all of the streams of text that went into the email message causing spurious

's to appear in the delivered message.

It wasn't entirely as free-format / flexible as iw_solution_email.ipl - but then it wasn't intended to be.

What is this task_output xml you're referencing?

Yeah, I'm an old-timer. That's 1.

I checked and was actually referring to iw_solution_email.ipl and my biggest gripe about this script is that it's not as flexible with the mail recipients and I think it should be. I've found myself loosening this script so that it would allow for other options for input. But then, I guess having to customize this script isn't such a big deal -- it would have been nice to have this thing be so generic and flexible to begin with.

The task_output I'm referring to is the debug information when you use iw_solution_email.ipl. This contains all of the XML pertaining to the task in question and includes some elements of the workflow.

I have a quick question about the solution email script. It looks like from reading the documentation that you can only use it with a solution workflow. Is that true or can it be used with workflow that was created in house?

It can be used with any workflow, provided that you have the appropriate task variables associated with your email task. If you've been reading the documentation, I'm sure you've seen it but it basically needs a header template, body template, and I think another template to put together the email addresses and a couple of other task variables.

I'm going by memory so I remember only so much but yes, you can use it with custom workflows.
