Deleting unnecessary workflow objects

Good day, colleagues.

We have a deployed application which has been used for a long period.

Recently we found out that all(huge amount) dm_workflow objects have r_runtime_state = 1 (so, they are still running)

Dm_workflow is connected with dmi_workitem(ofcourse). In this table we have immense quantity of objects which are connected with one workflow, but all r_rutime_state = 2.(so, they are finished).

And the last thing - that we have a very big amount of dmi_packages which are linked with dm_workflows, which have all dmi_workitems finished.

So, the question is - can I delete manually(by SQL) workflows which have workitems with only finished runstates (and all the packages which are made for a that workflows)?

Have you tried running Queue Management job yet? Not sure if it will resolve your issue, but it wouldnt hurt to try.

We'll make a backup tomorrow on our test-base and try to run this Job... I've already seen the code of this job, but on other production system we used our custom query to delete dequed and not useful queue_items(but not dm_workflows, dmi_workitems and dmi_packages)

But it is more interesting to know another way to solve this problem.

Can anybody share experience?

Yes you can, but this will just corrupt other actions as workflow reporting and audits and ...

Try migrating these workflows towards a workflow (process template) with a lower lifecycle if the number of workitems, queue_items, dmi_packages is so high (cfr r_act_seqno - what is the average for these workflows in your environment)

If I'm not mistaking, for each queue item (delete flag false (finished task) or true (task in inbox)) there is a workitem and each workitem has a dmi_package record in some kind of way( workflow r_act_seqno = workitem r_act_seqno = package r_act_seqno). Touching this will break up other functionality like workflow reporting, opening tasks, audits, ...

1/ Try to clean as much by making sure the dm_DMClean job is running on frequently basis. (aborted workflows)

2/ As mentionend above, the dm_QueueMgt job to clean deleted queue items

3/ Also mark queue items that are notifications and older than x days as deleted so they are removed by the queue mgt job

2/ Go to processes with a shorter lifecycle and less activities if the r_act_seqno average is rather high (r_act_seqno of the current active workflows/process)

If deleting, try first deleting by DQL (use DQL editor DA or a similar tool like DQL tester, ...) and if really unable to do so, with SQL (not advised).

Thank you, for help and for new ideas, cause we haven't thought about audits and workflow reporting - it is the place for exloration.

1.) We're not able to corrupt users functionality - because we've already deleted dequeued items. So I'm not sure if there is a need to run dm_QueueMgt

2.) We practicaly do not have aborted tasks. So we won't solve the problem by dm_DMClean.

Yes, we've tried to delete it by DQL and found out that we can't delete dmi_packages and dmi_workitems(https://community.emc.com/thread/65684).

Hi Phil,

Want to share something with u.

I have tried termnating some workflowsfrom DA , but error came :[DM_OBJ_MGR_E_FETCH_FAIL]error : "attemp to fetch object with handle 1b006ccd803f87ff failed"

I tried to destroy the workflow via the API as it was not getting terminated from DA. But same error("attempt to fetch object with handle 1b006ccc803131d6 failed" ) came while executing the destroy API for the workflow.

And Now I can not teminate the workflow neither from DA nor from API command.

Will this happening because some of the queue items have been corrupted of some workflows???If that is the case then what can be done??

I am facing same issue as Phil. There are number of workflows in running state.

But in my case for End autoactivity dmi_workitem is not getting generated. Workflow object remains in running state and End activity never executes.

End activity is being executed by Docbase Owner. Couldn't find any error logs for the same.

End Activity is the last activity in a workflow. Previous to End there is Archive activity which is also an auto activity. It runs successfully.
