How can I update an attribute value with activity name in the workflow.

Hi,

I have a custom attribute of our custom document which can be attached to a Workflow. I need to update the value of the custom attribute with the activity name of the activity that is being performed as the document passes through the workflow. How can I do that automatically? What is best way?

Please share your knowledge and experience.

Hi,

If the activity name you wish to apply to your doc is a manul activity then add an automatic activity in the WF straight after it. Create a custom WF method implementing IDmMethod for this auto activity and retrieve the last activity name executed (this will be your attribute value). Then get the document in your WF package and update its value. Here is some code that may help.

Hi,

As far as I understand your need, you only want to fill an attribute "activity_name" with the name of the manual activity being performed. This update could be done just before or just after the manual activity, depending on you precise requirements.

For me, everything can be done by configuration, without any custom code.

Since the name of the manual activity is something you need to configure within Process Builder, it's probably acceptable to update the attribute "activity_name" using an activity "Process Data Mapping". This automatic activty will only be in charge of filling attribute "activity_name" with a fix string.

Sample:

Step N: an automatic activity nammed "Update activity_name" (for instance), which is based on the activty template "Process Data Mapping". This data mapping contains a single rule: set the string "My manual activity" to the attribute "activity_name" of the package holding your document.
Step N+1: Manual activity nammed "My manual activity" (or anything you want, as soon as it's the same string as in the process data mapping).

The only drawback is in case on renaming of the manual activity: you will have to change this string twice (name of the manual activity itself, and the string assigned to the attribute "activity_name" in the process data mapping activty).

If you are using Process Builder, you can do this using Process Data Mapper activity. No custom coding is necessary.

I am curious about the Process Builder versus Workflow Manager which is still being used. I need to know what the differences in using Process Builder versus Workflow Manager are. May be I need to read to read either release notes or developer guide or user guide for Process Builder. I need to know which version gives more info. Probably 6.0. If You have more info, please let me know.
