remove middle of an array

I have an array, of files and dirs. My plan is to write code to get all the modified files under specified dir and
add it to the array. Easy enough.

But I want to get rid of the directories listed in the array. How can I do that & not leave spaces ?

@array=("dir1/file1","dir2","dir3/file3");

There has to be a better way than to use a second array ?

How about something like this: @array = grep { ! -d } @array;assuming that the entries in @array are full file-system paths. If they're relative to some other known directory ($dir) something like this: @array = grep { ! -d "$dir/$_" } @array;

For future reference, read up on splice() as well. It is used to manipulate arrays. A few examples:
splice(@array, 0, 1); # Removes the 1st element in the array.
splice(@array, 6, 1); # Removes the 7th element in the array.
splice(@array, 0, 3); # Removes the first 3 elements in the array.
splice(@array, 3, 4); # Removes the 4th-7th elements in the array.
splice(@array, -4, 4); # Removes the last 4 elements in the array.
splice(@array, 3, 0, "element"); # Inserts "element" as the 4th element in the array.
splice(@array, 3, 1, "element"); # Replaces the 4th element in the array with "element".
splice(@array, 0, 0, @arrayTwo); # Adds @arrayTwo to the beginning of @array.
my @arrayTwo = splice(@array, 4, 2); # Removes the 5th and 6th elements of @array and creates a new array @arrayTwo with these elements.
my $firstElement = splice(@array, 0, 1); # Removes the first element of @array and stores it in $firstElement.These are just a few examples of how you can use splice. But, as you can see it can be handy when manipulating the contents of arrays. As I said, you probably don't need it here, but this is more just an FYI in case you want to use it in the future.
