date validation in month dd, yyyy format

hi,
can somebody pls help me in validating a date in month dd, yyyy
format in datacapture template. Also i need to populate the date in the same format on datacapture publish date field. I have the regex for other formats, but i did'nt get this format anywhere.

It wud be very grateful if somebody can give me the validation in this format.

Please be more explicit about the format of the date information - is it actually be stored as 'month' ("January", "February", etc.) followed by a 2-digit date (0-padded), followed by a comma and then a 4-digit year?

Are you doing the validation via a validation-regex directive or via FormAPI code?

Also - please show at least some aspect of what you've actually tried.

A simplest regex would be:

/^(January|February|March|April|May|June|July|August|September|October|November|December|) [0-3][0-9], 20[0-9]{2}$/

Now, this will allow days from 00 - 39 in each month and will only work for years from 2000 to 2099.

If you want a better regex, it would be fairly easy to put together, but I don't have the time now...

ya i want the same format as perceived by ghoti. i am trying it through validation key right now but i can use formAPI also for this. i tried the key given by jeff but it is not working. it does'nt satisfies my requirement. previously i was doing simple MM-DD-YYYY date format validation and it was working fine.but now i need to change it.

You need to be more clear about what your requirement is. So, if fish's summary is right and Jeff provided a loose regex for this summary, your explanation needs to be better. Or, you'll need to let us know what it IS mistakenly allowing (or disallowing). Jeff's regex is a start, which he mentioned.

my requirement is to validate date in month dd,YYYY format either through Validation regex or formAPI. i tried the key given by jeff but it does'nt even allow April 04,2006 which it shud. thts y i said this key is not working.i also tried several variations in the same key and tried different dates also by removing spaces and commas etc. still that was not working. it was'nt validating any date. Please let me know if i can do it thru validation key or not otherwise i will try it through formAPI only.

I tend to prefer using FormAPI but Jeff's regex should be just fine for a basic date validation in the format you specified. In looking at the date you tested with, however, you might want to change the regex to:

/^(January|February|March|April|May|June|July|Augus t|September|October|November|December)\s?[0-3][0-9],\s?20[0-9]{2}$/

The date you gave didn't have a space between the comma and the year which is not what you said it would be. You had indicated that it would conform to "month dd, yyyy" (hence, the space). So, if you want to allow for spaces to be optional, take the regex above which allows for either 0 or 1 space between the month and the day and another 0 or 1 space between the comma and the year. You could also put "\s?" between other things, too. OR you could include a pop-up calendar so that they wouldn't ever need to type in the date manually and then you wouldn't need to be concerned about all of the permutations of "mmm\s?dd\s?,\s?yyyy".

Side note about regexes... the "?" character allows for 0 or 1 of the preceding character to be used, in this case, a space. "*" allows for 0 to infinitely many and "+" allows for 1 to infinitely many.
