Adding CMIS via Atom to a new Documentum Dev 6.6 install

I've just been locked in mortal combat with the developer edition 6.6 and I now have it to the point where I have a repository, a working webtop and da that I can login to from a remote machine. In addition to that, I'm a documentum n00bie

The purpose of my efforts has been to provide our developers with a server that can test the CMIS integration for our code. Our preference is to use AtomPub.

Can someone explain, in terms that your mother-in-law would understand, the following... using Atom, how I do access the repository I have created?

Am I missing something, is there something else to download, more to install, something else to configure, a magic URL, and/or another config file to hack to make it work?

EMC provided CMIS 6.7 (and 6.7SP1 in case there is) is the only supported version till now. It has dependency on both DFS and DFC 6.7 libraries but can acess to Content Server 6.5 or 6.6 as well. For standalone app server deployment, please download emc-dfs.ear or emc-dfs.war from EMC site, configure dfc.properties, and deploy it in the app server.

Please refer to EMC CMIS deployment guide for details. And please read EMC CMIS reference guide to understand how CMIS data model is mapped to Documentum, and all other special considerations.

EMC doesn't provide a CMIS client implementation; EMC thinks the CMIS client should be independent of any vendor specific implementation; it just needs to follow CMIS spec defined protocols, and should be able to have access to any vendor specific implementation. There are a lot of open source CMIS clients today, e.g. OpenCmis.

I don't think that CMIS is included in 6.6. Official support of CMIS came with Documentum 6.7. However, you should be able to download the 6.7 CMIS EAR or WAR file and deploy it on a supported app server. It will work against a 6.6 Content Server.

There's plenty of example out there on how to access a repository through CMIS. You may also want to take a look at Apache Chemistry which provides a simple Java or .NET API for CMIS.

A reminder to myself once I have full Powerlink access (https://powerlink.emc.com) and can download the emc-cmis.war which I'll need to get CMIS running on my Dev 6.6 server...

So, how did people have CMIS access to Documentum as mentioned in some other forum entries that are up to 3 years old? Surely 6.7 wasn't out then.

EMC CMIS implementation is officially shipped with Documentum 6.7, by default contained in Documentum 6.7 Java Method Server. It doesn't mean CMIS supports Content Server 6.7 only. You can deploy CMIS in a standalone app server and target to your Content Server 6.6. It's not recommended to deploy CMIS in Documentum 6.6 Java Method Server.

Yes, we're looking to provide a CMIS client app for our current customers.

Hopefully getting CMIS working will be easier than the dev install of Documentum. That had some traps for young players, and I'm very young in Documentum terms.

I finally have the emc-cmis.war file.

I'm starting to get a clearer picture of what lies ahead, however I still have many questions. A few are:

William, are you saying I should not install the CMIS .war on the same server as the Documentum Developer Edition 6.6 is running on, and that instead I should build an OpenCMIS server (or similar) and install the .war there?
The cmis-runtime.properties file mentioned in the install guide doesn't exist on my Documentum server. As it's packed into the .war which seems to end up in a different directory every time the java service is restarted, how do I make the edits stick? Ah... don't install it into the same app server as documentum, and if I really have to go against the recommendation then edit it in the .war.

William is saying that you shouldn't deploy CMIS on the Java Method Server that ships with Content Server 6.6. But you can install it on the same box, just a separate app server. Tomcat is the simplest one as it's just a servlet container as opposed to full-blown JEE server for the others. The cmis-runtime.properties file is in the war file. Just expand the cmis war file under the tomcat deploy directory and modify it if needed.

While I know it's not recommended, we just want a self contained server that will respond to CMIS requests. We aren't using the documentum developer server for much more than that. So, while you gentlemen have given good advice there, and anyone wanting to run Documentum correctly should heed the above advice.

Being rebels or slow learners, what we did was edit the dfc.properties file as per the official CMIS install instructions and replace the one in the emc-cmis.war. We then put the .war into the <Documentum>\jboss4.3.0\server\DctmServer_MethodServer\deploy folder, and restarted the services.
