When creating custom attributes for our custom document, I see the following check boxes: * Attribute cannot be blank * Attribute is read-only * Attribute can have NULL value * Attribute can be modified on immutable objects * Attribute is hidden From the above list I am focussing on the check boxes 2 and 4. If I use one or both, is my purpose resolved? Can any body give more details about these two check boxes? What is the best practice to achieve my goal? Defining an attribute of read-only does not affect the workflow; it only affects how UI renders the attribute. Since workflow sets the value programmatically, this setting has no affect on the workflow. So you can do what you want and still have the attribute not editable to the user.

This can be done via UI (WDK) customization, where you'd specify the docbaseattributevalue control to be read only

 (without going for an ACL with read only permissions).

I am new fir UI customization. Can you please give me some code snippet with some explanation? Also please give me good documentation for this. It would be great help to me.

The documentum expert Johnny Gee says the final approved document in a workflow can be linked to a folder with an ACL with read-only permissions attached to the folder. That is another option we are thinking of.
