xplore - control indexing by document type

Dear experts,

We are planning on using xPlore 1.0 for full-text indexing some of our custom document types. I would like to know what's the best way to configure/customize xplore tool to index specific document types.

I found below approaches from xplore admin guide:

1. Disable fulltext indexing on unwanted document type and enable full-text indexing on required types

2. Use the index agent filter to specify 'TypesToExclude'

Both the approaches have limitations. We have to make changes after adding every new document type.

Is there any way to specify a list of document types to be included for FT indexing - rather than have a list of types to be excluded.

These settings apply for day-forward operations. When you start a reindexing operation, you usually specifiy what type of objects you want to reindex. You can also limit the reindexing to the types that you want (one type at a time). Check the documentation for details.

I suggest (if possible) to install v1.2 of xPlore (part of 6.7 SP1 release). What you are requesting seems to be a reasonable feature request, which may have been introduced in latest release?

I would first use the first option to filter out the document types that you don't need. By default, dm_sysobject is configured for indexing and that includes pretty much all persistent objects. Typically, customers prefer to start with the root of their custom hierarchy so that only their business content gets indexed.

E.g. if you have a base type called my_base_doc underneath dm_document, register this type for indexing and disable dm_sysobject. This will also include all your custom doc types (i.e. underneath my_base_doc). In addition, you should also register the type dm_folder if you need to do folder descend searches (you get that for free if you keep the default indexing of dm_sysobject, but need to register it if you disable indexing for dm_sysobject).

The advantage of this approach is that you avoid generating thousands of dmi_queue_items for indexing. You can use the second option (filters) to do some fine-grained filtering. Just my two cents...

Due to some limitations, we couldn't get supported infrastructure for xPlore 1.2 and hence we are going with v 1.0

I tried the approach of disabling 'Full-text Indexing' at dm_sysobject level and registering my custom type alone for indexing. Interestingly, the xplre IA indexed all the sysobjects in docbase during re-indexing. I verified and confirmed through DA that all other descendents of dm_sysobject have the 'Register for Indexing' option disabled.

Any thing that I'm missing out here...?

I implented this by referrring to 'Filtering object types from indexing' in the xplore dev guide. This filter is working both during re-index and day-forward index operations.

As bacham2 mentioned, the flag at object type level, to be skipped from indexing, seems to be working only for day-forward operations.

Dear NM,

I am not able to find out the Second step ('Filtering object types from indexing')where to perform that " Click Check or update filter settings"

If you are refering to 'Filtering object types from indexing', check out Page#46 in 'Documentum xPlore Development Guide Version 1.0'. You need to create a BOF module to avail this option.
