I have been looking at the "EMC Documentum Content Server Enterprise Edition Version 6.7 Installation Guide", you definately can run multiple Content Servers on the same windows host. By default they will share the same JMS which is installed by default. However there is a process to create additional JMS see:
p126: Installing and configuring JMS for HA on a single host
and
p151: Configuring Multiple Content Servers on a Single Host for a Particular Repository
I would suggest that you review and ensure that all your developers will be using best practices... No sense in putting in a lot of effort on performance hard ware and config, to be tripped up by some silly developer holding onto sessions and objects instances.... Also would help deployment if methods use the IDfMethod interface as these can be deployed via BOF (i.e. Composer & Dar file)
It would also make sense, that your development environment, has at least 2 Content Servers and JMS instances. That hopefully would elimnate problems before getting to Test / pre prod
I presume you are talking about unix/linux server, since I dont think you can do this on windows.
From my own personal experience, when a CS goes down, its related to the physical server (eg network card). In this instance, having both CS installed on the same server doesnt help your failover situation.
What are you trying to do that you think having multiple CS will satisfy your requirements?
Actually this is supported on Windows as well and probably more useful in the Windows case.
Each Content Server instance can handle at most 1000 concurrent sessions. If you exceeed that limit but your hardware has capacity for handling more load, you can install a second Content Server instance on the same box, and a third, etc.
On 32-bit Windows, there is another limitation that you will hit before the 1000 sessions: that's the maximum process size which is around 2.5 GB for the main Content Server process (documentum.exe). In that case, it is typical to install additional instances on the same box. With the new Windows native 64-bit support introduced in D6.7, you don't have that limit anymore,but you still have the 1000 concurrent sessions limit.
On Unix, this 2 GB limit was never a problem because each session gets its own Unix process. However, it might be interesting to install additional instances in the Unix case even before you hit the 1000 limit because this would reduce the overhead on the root process. Plus you get an extra docbasic method server, workflow agent, etc.

I haven’t done this on Windows, but I have done it on Unix. You simply have different “install owners”. Each install owner user will have their own .bashrc (or equiv) and reference unique environment variables, and unique ports, etc. The last time I did this was around the time VM’s were becoming more popular. Honestly, with VM’s of today, I would like use VMs over running multiple CS’s on 1 server. Running multiple CS’s on 1 server can often become confusing, etc, especially if you need to frequently switch back and forth. The only time I might see this would be in a dev environment. I would use a VM in a prod environment. Still, VMs are easier. I work w a large partner. We have in a library of VMs, every version of Documentum for the past x years. If we need to deal with a customer for that version, we simply boot up that VM, etc. We only keep up and running the VMs we are using. On my laptop, I have 5 different VMs (workstation), with varying products installed on each. I use those for demo’s and development. Of course, I never have all of them running at once.

You are confusing things Kyle! Julien asked about multiple Content Servers serving the SAME docbase. In that case, there is only one installation owner. You are talking about installing multiple Content Servers (possibly different versions) on the same box. It is correct that this can only be done on Unix (Windows is generating registry entries that do not allow this).

Because my question is that for each CS, you also have a JMS and in workflow intensive platform, performance bootlneck is the JMS. Is it possible to customize JMS to increase performance or you have to install multi CS (and JMS) to increase performance ?
You do have the option to tune JMS by changing the memory settings for it. As for tuning workflow processing, you also have the option to change the number of worker threads and latency (how often the process engine checks). Both of these will impact performance of workflow. Keep in mind, you dont magically get performance improvements without the expense of something else.
bacham, I thought the same way about having multiple installations on windows, but I havent tried it recently with 6.7. Maybe Kyle has, so I will defer until someone has proven otherwise.
