Hi Nico,
in one of our portals we use IIS for virtualize workarea, staging and all editions,
it's not a full portal virtualization 'cause we only display the content area, not the full portal view with navigation areas.

In another portal we have a combination of Apache Tomcat and IIS for a full virtualization of our workarea and staging.
